Ashwagandha, a traditional herb from Ayurvedic medicine

Our food supplement is formulated from ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), a plant native to dry regions of India such as Rajasthan and Gujarat, but which also grows in Nepal, China and Yemen. Sometimes known as Indian ginseng, the ashwagandha herb has been used in traditional Indian medicine for thousands of years. In Ayurvedic medicine, ashwagandha is considered a Rasayana – a tonic for restoring and maintaining health and longevity.

The Many Medicinal Properties of Ashwagandha

An Ayurvedic tonic and conditioner, ashwagandha owes its reputation to its many medicinal properties: it is believed to have anxiolytic, hypotensive, analgesic and antioxidant effects. As a result, this energizing plant is traditionally used to treat problems related to aging, impotence and mental fatigue. Offered as a natural anti-stress remedy to help soothe and relax, ashwagandha is also used to combat insomnia and anxiety.

Ashwagandha, a recognized adaptogenic herb

With its many benefits and anti-stress effects, ashwagandha is classified as an adaptogenic herb. These atypical plants have the particularity of increasing the body’s ability to adapt to different stressful situations. In other words, they tend to regulate various metabolic functions. However, not only are there differences in the behavior of these adaptogenic herbs, but their effects can vary from individual to individual. This is the case with ashwagandha which tends to have a particular effect on brain function and the immune system.

Withanolides, powerful compounds of ashwagandha

It is the steroidal lactone content of ashwagandha, particularly the withanolides, that is responsible for the stimulating and beneficial effects of this herbal remedy. Among these withanolides, withaferin A could be the most powerful active principle of the plant. This molecule would have many effects on the cells of the body: anti-inflammatory, cardio-protective, neuro-protective, immuno-suppressive and anti-tumor. While further studies are underway to further explore its mechanisms of action, withaferin A may well offer significant therapeutic potential, both in terms of prevention and treatment of certain diseases.
